FALLS OF See also:GERSOPPA , a See also:cataract on the Sharavati See also:river in the See also:North See also:Kanara See also:district of Bombay . The falls are considered the finest in See also:India . The river descends in four See also:separate cascades called the See also:Raja or Horseshoe, the Roarer, the See also:Rocket and the See also:Dame See also:Blanche . The cliff over which the river plunges is 83o ft. high, and the See also:pool at the See also:base of the Raja Fall is 132 ft. deep . The falls are reached by See also:boat from Honavar, or by road from See also:Gersoppa See also:village, 18 m. distant . Near the village are extensive ruins (the finest of which is a cruciform See also:temple) of Nagarbastikere, the See also:capital of the Jain chiefs of Gersoppa . Their See also:family was established in See also:power in 1409 by the See also:Vijayanagar See also:kings, but subsequently became practically See also:independent . The chieftaincy was several times held by See also:women, and on the See also:death of the last See also:queen (1608) it collapsed, having been attacked by the See also:chief of Bednur . Among the Portuguese the district was celebrated for its See also:pepper, and they called its queen " See also:Regina da pimenta " (queen of pepper) . |
