GIMP , or Galan . (r) (Of somewhat doubtful origin, but prob- ably a nasal See also:form of the Fr. guipure, from guiper, to See also:cover or " See also:whip " a See also:cord over with See also:silk), a stiff trimming made of silk or See also:cotton See also:woven around a See also:firm cord, often further ornamented by a See also:metal cord See also:running through it . It is also sometimes covered with bugles, beads or other glistening ornaments . The the seats of chairs, &c., is also called gimp; and in See also:lace See also:work it is the firmer or coarser See also:thread which outlines the See also:pattern and strengthens the material . (2) A shortened form of gimple (the O.E. wimple), the kerchief worn by a See also:nun around her See also:throat, sometimes also applied to a nun's stomacher . |
