COLMAR See also:GOLTZ (1843- )  , Prussian soldier and military writer, was See also:born at Bielkenfeld, See also:East See also:Prussia, on the 12th of See also:August 1843, and entered the Prussian See also:infantry in 1861 . In 1864 he entered the See also:Berlin Military See also:Academy, but was temporarily withdrawn in 1866 to serve in the See also:Austrian See also:war, in which he was wounded at See also:Trautenau . In 1867 he joined the topographical See also:section of the See also:general See also:staff, and at the beginning of the Franco-See also:German War of 1870-71 was attached to the staff of See also:Prince See also:Frederick See also:Charles . He took See also:part in the battles of See also:Vionville and See also:Gravelotte and in the See also:siege of See also:Metz . After its fall he served under the Red Prince in the See also:campaign of the See also:Loire, including the battles of See also:Orleans and Le Mans . He was appointed in 1871 See also:professor at the military school at See also:Potsdam, and the same See also:year was promoted See also:captain and placed in the See also:historical section of the general staff . It was then he wrote See also:Die Operationen der II . Armee bis zur See also:Capitulation von Metz and Die Sieben Tage von Le Mans, both published in 1873 . In 1874 he was appointed to the staff of the 6th See also:division, and while so employed "wrote Die Operationen der II . Armee an der Loire and See also:Leon See also:Gambetta and See also:seine Armeen, published in 1875 and 1877 respectively . The latter was translated into See also:French the same year, and both are impartially written . The views expressed in the latter See also:work led to his being sent back to regimental See also:duty for a See also:time, but it was not See also:long before he returned to the military See also:history section .

Goltz was appointed lecturer in military history at the military academy at Berlin, where he remained for five years and attained the See also:rank of See also:major . He published, in 1883, See also:Rossbach and See also:Jena (new and revised edition, Von Rossbach bis Jena and Auerstadt, 1906), Das See also:Volk in Waffen (See also:English See also:translation The Nation in Arms), both of which quickly became military See also:classics, and during his See also:residence in Berlin contributed many articles to the military See also:journals . In See also:June 1883 his services were See also:lent to See also:Turkey to reorganize the military establishments of the See also:country . He spent twelve years in this work, the result of which appeared in the See also:Greco-See also:Turkish War of 1897, and he was made a See also:pasha and in 1895 a mushir or See also:field-See also:marshal . On his return to See also:Germany in 1896 he became a See also:lieutenant-general and See also:commander of the 5th division, and in 1898, See also:head of the Engineer and See also:Pioneer See also:Corps and inspector-general of fortifications . In 190o he was made general of infantry and in 1902 commander of the I. See also:army corps . In 1907 he was made inspector-general of the newly created See also:sixth army inspection established at Berlin, and in 1908 was given the rank of See also:colonel-general (Generaloberst) . In addition to the See also:works already named and frequent contributions to military periodical literature, he wrote Kriegfuhrung (1895, later edition Krieg- and Heerfuhrung, 1901; Eng. trans . The Conduct of War) ; Der thessalische Krieg (Berlin, 1898) ; See also:Ain Ausflug nach Macedonien (1894); Anatolische Ausfluge (1896); a See also:map and description of the environs of See also:Constantinople; Von Jena bis Pr . See also:Eylau (1907), a most important historical work, carrying on the See also:story of Rossbach and Jena to the See also:peace of See also:Tilsit, &c .
