He served under See also:Sir See also:Hugh See also:Gough at the See also:battle of MVIaharajpur in 1843, winning a See also:brevet See also:majority, was adjutant-general of the army at the battles of See also:Moodkee in 1845 (twice severely wounded), and of Ferozshah and See also:Sobraon in 1846, receiving the C.B. and the brevet See also:rank of See also:lieutenant-See also:colonel . He took See also:part in the battles of See also:Chillianwalla and See also:Gujarat in 1849, gaining further promotion, and was appointed aide-de-See also:camp to the See also:queen . He served also in See also:Kohat in 1851 under Sir See also:Charles See also:Napier . Promoted major-general in•18J4, he was See also:commander-in-See also:chief of the See also:Madras army from 186 to 1861 . He was made K.C.B. in 18J7, and on General See also:Anson's See also:death was summoned to See also:Calcutta to take supreme command of the army in See also:India . From Calcutta he directed the operations against the mutineers, sending forces under See also:Havelock and See also:Outram for the See also:relief of See also:Cawnpore and See also:Lucknow, until the arrival of Sir See also:Colin See also:Campbell from See also:England as commander-in-chief, when he returned to Madras . On leaving India in 1861 he was decorated with the G.C.B . He was promoted lieutenant-general in 1862, was See also:governor of See also:Malta from 1867 to 1872, was made G.C.M.G. in 1868, promoted general in 187o, field marshal in 1883 and colonel of the Royal See also:Horse See also:Guards and See also:gold-stick-in-waiting to the queen in 1885 .

He married as his second wife, in 1844, Frances Maria, daughter of Sir Hugh (afterwards See also:

Lord) Gough . He was governor of the Royal See also:Hospital, See also:Chelsea, from 1874 until his death there on the 28th of See also:March 1895 .
