HALICZ , a See also:town of See also:Austria, in See also:Galicia, 70 M. by See also:rail S.S.E. of See also:Lemberg . • Pop . (1900), 4809 . It is situated at the confluence of the Luckow with the See also:Dniester and its See also:principal resources are the recovery of See also:salt from the neighbouring brine See also:wells, See also:soap-making and the See also:trade in See also:timber . In the neighbourhood are the ruins of the old See also:castle, the seat of the ruler of the former See also:kingdom from which Galicia derived its See also:Polish name . Halicz, which is mentioned in See also:annals as See also:early as 1113, was from 1141 to 1255 the See also:residence of the princes of that name, one of the principalities into which western See also:Russia was then divided . The town was then much larger, as is shown by excavations in the See also:neighbour-See also:hood made during the 19th See also:century, and probably met its See also:doom during the Mongol invasion of 1240 . In 1349 it was incorporated in the kingdom of See also:Poland . |
