He took See also:part in the See also:defence of See also:Edinburgh, and in the battles of Langside (1568) and Restalrig (1571)

He had stoutly opposed the See also:marriage of See also:Mary with See also:Darnley, and when, after Restalrig, he was captured by the queen's troops, he narrowly escaped See also:execution
.
He represented See also:Morton at the See also:conference of 1578, and was one of the royal commissioners to the See also:General See also:Assembly in 1582 and again in 1588
.
He died in See also:February 1589
