See also:HASDEU, or HAJDEU, BOGDAN PETRICEICU (1836–1907) , Rumanian philologist, was See also:born at See also:Khotin in See also:Bessarabia in 1836, and studied at the university of See also:Kharkov . In 1858 he first settled in See also:Jassy as See also:professor of the high school and librarian . He may be considered as the See also:pioneer in many branches of Rumanian See also:philology and See also:history . At Jassy he started his Archiva historica a Romaniei (1865–1867), in which a large number of old documents in See also:Slavonic and Rumanian were published for the first See also:time . In 187o he inaugurated Columna lui Traian, the best philological See also:review of the time in See also:Rumania . In his Cuvente den Bibtrdni (2 vols., 1878–1881) he was the first to contribute to the history of apocryphal literature in Rumania . His Historia crilica a Romanilor (1815), though incomplete, marks the beginning of See also:critical investigation into the history of Rumania . See also:Hasdeu edited the See also:ancient Psalter of Coresi of 1577 (Psaltirea lui Coresi, 1881) . His Etymologicum magnum Romaniae (1886, &c.) is the beginning of an encyclopaedic See also:dictionary of the Rumanian See also:language, though never finished beyond the See also:letter B . In 1876 he was appointed director of the See also:state archives in See also:Bucharest and in 1878 professor of philology at See also:tile university of Bucharest . His See also:works, which include one See also:drama, Rasvon ci Vidra, See also:bear the impress of See also:great originality of thought, and the author is often carried away by his profound erudition and vast See also:imagination . Hasdeu was a keen politician . After the See also:death of his only See also:child Julia in 1888 he became a mystic and a strong believer in spiritism .
