GREGOR VON See also:HELMERSEN (1803-1885) , See also:Russian geologist, was See also:born at Laugut-Duckershof, near Dorpat, on the 29th of See also:September (O.S.) 1803 . He received an See also:engineering training and became See also:major-See also:general in the See also:corps of See also:Mining See also:Engineers . In 1837 he was appointed See also:professor of See also:geology in the mining See also:institute at St See also:Petersburg . He was author of numerous See also:memoirs on the geology of See also:Russia, especially on the See also:coal and other See also:mineral deposits of the See also:country; and he wrote also some explanations to accompany See also:separate sheets of the See also:geological See also:map of Russia . His geological See also:work was continued to an advanced See also:age, one of the later publications being Studien caber See also:die Wanderblocke and die Diluvialgebilde Russlands (1869 and 1882) . Most of his memoirs were published by the Imperial See also:Academy of Sciences at St Petersburg . He died at St Petersburg on the 3rd of See also:February (O.S.) 1885 . |
