EBERHARD HERWARTH VON BITTENFELD (1796-'884)  , Prussian See also:general See also:field-See also:marshal, came of an aristocratic See also:family which had supplied many distinguished See also:officers to the Prussian See also:army . He entered the Guard.See also:infantry in '811, and served through the See also:War of Liberation (1813-15), distinguishing himself at Liitzen and See also:Paris . During the years of See also:peace he See also:rose slowly to high command . In the See also:Berlin revolution of '848 he was on See also:duty at the royal See also:palace as See also:colonel of the 1st See also:Guards . See also:Major-general in 1852, and See also:lieutenant-general in '856, he received the grade of general of infantry and the command of the VIIth (Westphalian) Army See also:Corps in '86o . In the Danish War of '864 he succeeded to the command of the Prussians when See also:Prince See also:Frederick See also:Charles became See also:commander-in-See also:chief of the See also:Allies, and it was under his leadership that the Prussians forced the passage into See also:Alsen on the 29th of See also:June . His troops won the actions of Huhnerwasser and Miinchengratz, and at See also:Koniggratz formed the right wing of the Prussian army . Herwarth himself directed the See also:battle against the See also:Austrian See also:left flank . In '87o he was not employed in the field, but was in See also:charge of the scarcely less important business of organizingand forwarding all the reserves and material required for the armies in See also:France . In 187' his See also:great services were recognized by promotion to the See also:rank of field-marshal . The See also:rest of his See also:life was spent in retirement at See also:Bonn, where he died in '884 .

Since 1889 the 13th (1st Westphalian) Infantry has See also:
