He was educated at See also:Shrewsbury school and New See also:College, See also:Oxford, where he took first classes in See also:classics . He was See also:president of the Oxford See also:Union in 1877 . He became a See also:fellow of his college in 1879, and lectured on See also:history for four years . In 188o he accepted an influential invitation to become pastor of the See also:Lyndhurst Road Congregational See also:church, See also:Hampstead, and subsequently took a very prominent See also:part in church and denominational See also:work generally . He delivered the Lyman See also:Beecher lectures at Yale in 1893; in 1898 he was chairman of the London Congregational Union; and in 1903 of the Congregational Union of See also:England and See also:Wales . In 1909 he took a prominent part in the 75th anniversary celebration of See also:Hartford Theological See also:Seminary . His numerous publications include books on theological, See also:critical, See also:historical, See also:biographical and devotional subjects .
