He studied See also:theology at See also:Gottingen and See also:jurisprudence at See also:Helmstedt, and was appointed, in 1766, See also:professor of See also:philosophy in See also:Halle . In this See also:year he made the acquaintance of J . W . L . (" Vater ") See also:Gleim, who, attracted by the See also:young poet's Poetische Versuche (1764), became his warm friend, and a lively See also:literary See also:correspondence ensued between Gleim in See also:Halberstadt and Jacobi in Halle . In See also:order to have Jacobi near him, Gleim succeeded in procuring for him a prebendal See also:stall at the See also:cathedral of Halberstadt in 1769, and here Jacobi issued a number of anacreontic lyrics and sonnets . He tired, however, of the lighter muse, and in 1774, to Gleim's grief, See also:left Halberstadt, and for two years (1774–1776) edited at Dusseldorf the See also:Iris, a quarterly for See also:women readers . Meanwhile, he wrote many charming lyrics, distinguished by exquisite See also:taste and true poetical feeling . In 1784 he became professor of literature at the university of See also:Freiburg See also:im See also:Breisgau, a See also:post which he held until his See also:death there on the 4th of See also:January 1814 . In addition to the earlier Iris, to which See also:Goethe, his brother F . H . Jacobi, Gleim and other poets contributed, he published, from 1803–1813, another periodical, also called Iris, in which See also:Klopstock, See also:Herder, See also:Jean See also:Paul, See also:Voss and the See also:brothers Stollberg also collaborated . Jacobi's Sammtliche Werke were published in 1774 (Halberstadt, 3 vols.) . Other See also:editions appeared at See also:Zurich in 1807–1813 and 1825 .
