KONTAGORA  , a See also:

province in the See also:British See also:protectorate of See also:Northern See also:Nigeria, on the See also:east See also:bank of the See also:Niger to the See also:north of See also:Nupe and opposite See also:Borgu . It is bounded W. by the Niger, S. by the province of Nupe, E. by that of See also:Zaria, and N. by that of See also:Sokoto . It has an See also:area of 14,500 sq . M. and a See also:population estimated at about 8o,000 . At the See also:time of the British occupation of Northern Nigeria the province formed a See also:Fula emirate . Before the Fula domination, which was established in 1864, the See also:ancient See also:pagan See also:kingdom of Yauri was the most important of the lesser kingdoms which occupied this territory . The Fula See also:conquest was made from Nupe on the See also:south and a tribe of See also:independent and warlike pagans continued to hold the See also:country between Kontagora and Sokoto on the north . The province was brought under British domination in 1901 as the result of a military expedition sent to prevent audacious slave-raiding in British protected territory and of threats directed against the British military station of Jebba on the Niger . The See also:town of Kontagora was taken in See also:January of 1901 . The emir See also:Ibrahim fled, and was not captured till See also:early in 1902 . The province, after having been held for a time in military occupation, was'organized for See also:administration on the same See also:system as the See also:rest of the protectorate . In 1903 Ibrahim, after agreeing to take the See also:oath of See also:allegiance to the British See also:crown and to accept the usual conditions of See also:appointment, which include the abolition of the slave See also:trade within the province, was reinstated as emir and the British See also:garrison was withdrawn .

Since then the development of the province has progressed favourably . Roads have been opened and Kontagora connected by See also:

telegraph with headquarters at Zungeru . British courts of See also:justice have been established at the British headquarters, and native courts in every See also:district . In 1904 an expedition reduced to submission the hitherto independent tribes in the northern See also:belt, who had up to that time blocked the road to Sokoto . Their arms were confiscated and their country organized as a district of the province under a See also:chief and a British assistant See also:resident .
