In 1793 he completed the See also:sixth and last See also:volume of Robert See also:Henry's See also:History of See also:Great See also:Britain, the portion which he wrote being in its strongly liberal See also:tone at variance with the preceding See also:part of the See also:work; and in 18oz he published his History of See also:Scotland from the See also:Union of the Crowns to the Union of the Kingdoms, a work showing consider-able See also:research . Attached to the History was a dissertation on the See also:Gowrie See also:conspiracy, and another on the supposed authenticity of See also:Ossian's poems . In another dissertation, prefixed to a second and corrected edition of the History published in 1804, Laing endeavoured to prove that See also:Mary, See also:queen of Scots, wrote the See also:Casket Letters, and was partly responsible for the See also:murder of See also:Lord See also:Darnley . In the same See also:year he edited the See also:Life and Historie of See also:King See also:James VI., and in 1805 brought out in two volumes an edition of Ossian's poems . Laing, who was a friend of See also:Charles James See also:Fox, was member of See also:parliament for Orkney and See also:Shetland from 1807 to 1812 . He died on the 6th of See also:November 1818 .
