See also:BARON See also:EDMUND See also:LYONS LYONS (1790-1858) , See also:British See also:admiral, was See also:born at See also:Burton, near See also:Christchurch, See also:Hampshire, on the 21st of See also:November 1790 . He entered the See also:navy, and served in the Mediterranean, and afterwards in the See also:East Indies, where in 1810 he won promotion by distinguished bravery . He became See also:post-See also:captain in 1814, and in 1826 commanded the "Blonde" See also:frigate at the See also:blockade of See also:Navarino, and took See also:part with the See also:French in the See also:capture of Kasteo Morea . Shortly before his See also:ship was paid off in 1835 he was knighted . From 1840 till 1853 See also:Lyons was employed on the See also:diplomatic service, being successively See also:minister to See also:Greece, See also:Switzerland and See also:Sweden . On the outbreak of the See also:war with See also:Russia he was appointed second in command of the British See also:fleet in the See also:Black See also:Sea under Admiral Dundas, whom he succeeded in the See also:chief command in 1854 . His See also:principal actual achievements in See also:battle were two—the support he rendered with his guns to the French at the See also:Alma in attacking the See also:left flank of the Russians, and the bold and brilliant part he took with his ship the " See also:Agamemnon " in the first See also:bombardment of the forts of Sebastopol; but his See also:constant vigilance, his multifarious activity, and his suggestions and counsels were much more advantageous to the allied cause than his specific exploits . In 1855 he was created See also:vice-admiral; in See also:June 1856 he was raised to the See also:peerage with the See also:title of See also:Baron Lyons of Christchurch .
