Succeeding to his See also:father's See also:property in 1852, he extended the range of his journeys to See also:Morocco and other parts of See also:Barbary, and before his return See also:home in 1854 had also visited See also:Egypt, See also:Palestine and other countries of the See also:Levant . In 1856-1857 he was again in See also:Algeria; in 1858 he reached the See also:city of Morocco ; and in 186o he succeeded in performing the See also:pilgrimage to See also:Mecca, which he afterwards described in Meine lhallfahrt nach Mecca (See also:Leipzig, 1865), but had to flee for his See also:life to See also:Jidda without visiting See also:Medina . He then visited See also:Aden and Bombay, and after some two years of study in See also:Europe again began to wander through the coasts and islands of the Mediterranean, repeatedly visiting Algeria . His first See also:book of travel, Drei Jahre See also:im Nordwesten von Afrika (Leipzig), appeared in 1863, and was followed by a variety of See also:works and essays, popular and scientific . See also:Maltzan's last book, Reise nach Sildarabien (See also:Brunswick, 1873), is chiefly valuable as a See also:digest of much See also:information about little-known parts of See also:south See also:Arabia collected from natives during a See also:residence at Aden in 187o-1871 . Among his other services to See also:science must be noticed his collection of Punic See also:inscriptions (Reise in See also:Tunis and Tripolis, Leipzig, 1870), and the editing of Adolph von See also:Wrede's remarkable See also:journey in See also:Hadramut (Reise in Hadramaut, &c., Brunswick, 187o) . After See also:long suffering from See also:neuralgia, Maltzan died by his own See also:hand at See also:Pisa on the 23rd of See also:February 1874 .
