MARIANUS SCOTUS (1028–1082 or 1083)  , chronicler (who must be distinguished from. his namesake Marianus Scotus, d . ,o88, See also:

abbot of St See also:Peter's, See also:Regensburg), was an Irishman by See also:birth, and called Moelbrigte, or servant of See also:Bridget . He was educated by a certain Tigernach, and having become a See also:monk he crossed over to the See also:continent of See also:Europe in 1056, and his subsequent See also:life was passed in the abbeys of St See also:Martin at See also:Cologne and of See also:Fulda, and at See also:Mainz . He died at Mainz, on the 22nd of See also:December 1082 or 1083 . Marianus wrote a Chronicon, which purports to be a universal See also:history from the creation of the See also:world to 1082 . The Chronicon was very popular during the See also:middle ages, and in See also:England was extensively used by See also:Florence of See also:Worcester and other writers . It was first printed at See also:Basel in 1559, and hasbeen edited with an introduction by G . See also:Waitz for the Monumenta Germaniae historica . Scriptores (Bd. v.) . See also W .
