In 1587 he joined in the See also:attempt to relieve See also:Sluys, in 1588 served as a volunteer against the See also:Spanish expedition, and commanded a See also:regiment in See also:Essex's expedition to See also:Normandy in 1591, taking part in the See also:siege of See also:Rouen . He was knighted by Essex the same year for having by his intercession with the queen procured his recall . In the parliaments of 1586 and 1588 he represented See also:Morpeth; in that of 1593, Callington; and in those of 1596 and 16oi, See also:Northumberland . From 1593 till the end of Elizabeth's reign he occupied various posts in the See also:government of the Scottish See also:borders, succeeding to his See also:father's See also:appointment of See also:lord See also:warden of the See also:marches in 1596, which he held till See also:February 1598 . In See also:March 1603 he visited the See also:court, and witnessed the queen's last illness, which he described in his See also:Memoirs . Anxious to recommend himself to her successor, and disobeying the orders of the See also:council, he started on horseback immediately after the queen's See also:death on the See also:morning of the 24th of March, in See also:order to be the first to communicate the tidings to See also:James, arrived at See also:Holy-See also:rood See also:late on the 26th, and was appointed by the See also:king a See also:gentleman of the bedchamber . But his conduct met with See also:general and merited censure as " contrary to all decency, See also:good See also:manners and respect," and on'James's arrival in See also:England he was dismissed from his new See also:post . On the 23rd of February 16o5, however, he was made See also:governor of See also:Prince See also:Charles, in 1611 his See also:master of the See also:robes, in 1617 his chamberlain, and on the 6th of February 1622, he was created Baron Carey of Leppington . In 1623 he followed Charles to See also:Spain, and after the latter's See also:succession to the See also:throne he was created See also:earl of See also:Monmouth in 1626 . He died on the 12th of See also:April 1639 .

His eldest son HENRY (1596-1661), succeeded him as 2nd earl of Monmouth, and on his death without surviving male issue the See also:

peerage became See also:extinct . His Memoirs were published first by the earl of See also:Cork and See also:Orrery in 1759, a new edition, annotated by Sir See also:Walter See also:Scott, being printed in 18o8 .
