MOULT  , a See also:

term for the shedding of feathers at the periodic renewal of the plumage by birds, and so transferred to the periodic shedding of the old skin, See also:shell, &c., by other animals . The word is seen in O . Eng. in the verb bimittian, to See also:exchange; from See also:Lat. mutare, to See also:change; cf. mod . Ger. mausen, mausern; the earlier forms in See also:English are mout, See also:mute; the insertion of the 1, as in " See also:fault," See also:dates from the 16th See also:century .
