Returning See also:home, he became in 1768 M.P. for the See also:Inverness Burghs, which he continued to represent in See also:parliament for more than See also:thirty years, though a considerable portion of this See also:period was spent in India, whither he returned in 1778 to take command of the See also:Madras army . In that year he took See also:Pondicherry from the French, but in 178o he was defeated by Hyder See also:Ali near See also:Conjeeveram, and forced .to fall back on St See also:Thomas's See also:Mount . There See also:Sir See also:Eyre See also:Coote took over command of the army, and in 1781 won a See also:signal victory against Hyder Ali at See also:Porto Novo, where Munro was in command of the right See also:division . See also:Negapatam was taken by Munro in See also:November of the same year; and in 1782 he returned to See also:England . He died on the 27th of See also:December 1805 .
