NAIVASHA , the name of a See also:lake, See also:town and See also:province, in See also:British See also:East See also:Africa . The lake, which is roughly circular with a See also:diameter of some 13 m., lies at an See also:altitude of 6135 ft. on the See also:crest of the highest See also:ridge in the eastern rift-valley between the Kikuyu escarpment on the east and the Mau escarpment on the See also:west . It is fed from the See also:north by the See also:rivers See also:Gilgal and Morendat, but has no known outlet . The rivers, which have a minimum See also:discharge of too cub. ft. per second, run in deep gullies . The See also:water of the lake is fresh; the See also:shore in many places is lined with See also:papyrus . North and north-west the lake is closed in by the volcanic See also:Burn hills; to the See also:south towers the See also:extinct See also:volcano of Longonot . Hippopotami and otters frequent the lake, and on an See also:island about 1 m. from the shore are large See also:numbers of antelopes and other See also:game . Naivasha was discovered in 1883 by Gustav Adolf See also:Fischer (1848-1886), one of the See also:early explorers of the See also:Tana and See also:Masai regions, and the first to demonstrate the continuance of the rift-valley through See also:equatorial Africa . Fischer was followed later in the same See also:year by See also:Joseph See also:Thomson, the Scottish explorer .
