Serving in the See also:Crimea upon his return, he was appointed See also:lieutenant in See also:charge of the naval cadets on the inauguration of the " Britannia " training See also:ship, and was then employed in See also:surveying See also:work on the N.E. See also:coast of See also:Australia and in the Mediterranean, attaining the See also:rank of captain in 1869 . While in command of the " Challenger " (1872–1874), in the famous voyage of deep-See also:sea exploration See also:round the See also:world, he was ordered See also:home to take command of the Arctic expedition which set See also:sail in the See also:spring of 1875 in the See also:ships " Alert " and " See also:Discovery." He published a narrative of the voyage on his return, and for his services was made K.C.B . (1876) . Two years later he was sent in command of the" Alert " to survey See also:Magellan Strait . From 1879 to 1896 he was attached to the See also:Harbour See also:Department of the See also:Board of See also:Trade . He retired from active service in 1886, and became a See also:vice-See also:admiral in 1892 .
