What must be understood as a meaningful overview is that the Franks controlled almost all of western and central Europe from Clovis's time to the tortured formation of France and Germany (the 9th and 10th centuries). Its culture--or more exactly, lack of it--influenced especially Germany for ill for a long time to come. When the Romans found these people (in the vicinity of the Rhine River, 3rd and 4th centuries A.D.), they were illiterate barbarians of the worst sort. They rose in wealth and influence over the many decades and centuries but their brutal thuggery remained.
