(1900) 21,933, of which two-thirds are Germans . It is situated on the See also:March, and is the ecclesiastical See also:metropolis of Moravia . Until 1886 See also:Olmutz was one of the strongest fortresses of Austria, but the fortifications have been removed, and their See also:place is occupied by a town See also:park, gardens and promenades . Like .most See also:Slavonic towns, it contains several large squares, the See also:chief of which is adorned with a trinity See also:column, 115 ft. high, erected in 1740 . The most prominent See also:church is the See also:cathedral, a See also:Gothic See also:building of the 14th See also:century, restored in 1883—1886, with a See also:tower 328 ft. high and the biggest church-See also:bell in Moravia . It contains the See also:tomb of See also:King See also:Wenceslaus III., who was murdered here in 1306 . The See also:Mauritius church, a See also:fine Gothic building of the 15th century, and the St See also:Michael church are also See also:worth mentioning . The See also:principal See also:secular building is the town-See also:hall, completed in, the 15th century, flanked on one See also:side by a Gothic See also:chapel, trans-formed now into a museum . It possesses a tower 250 ft. high, adorned with an astronomical See also:clock, an See also:artistic and famous See also:work, executed by Anton Pohl in 1422 .

The old university, founded in 1570 and suppressed in 1858, is now represented by a theological See also:

seminary, which contains a very valuable library and an important collection of See also:manuscripts and See also:early prints . 0lmutz is an important railway junction, and is the See also:emporium of a busy See also:mining and See also:industrial See also:district . Its See also:industries include See also:brewing and distilling and the manufacture of See also:malt, See also:sugar and See also:starch . Olmutz is said to occupy the site of a See also:Roman fort founded in the imperial See also:period, the See also:original name of which, See also:Mons Julii, has been gradually corrupted to the See also:present See also:form . At a later period Olmutz was See also:long the See also:capital of the Slavonic See also:kingdom of Moravia, but it ceded that position to Briinn in 164o . The See also:Mongols were defeated here in 1241 by Yaroslav von See also:Sternberg . During the See also:Thirty Years' See also:War it was occupied by the Swedes for eight years . The town was originally fortified by Maria See also:Theresa during the See also:wars with See also:Frederick the See also:Great, who besieged the to nn unsuccessfully for seven See also:weeks in 1758 . In 1848 Olmutz was the See also:scene of the See also:emperor See also:Ferdinand's See also:abdication, and in 185o an important See also:conference took place here between See also:Austrian and See also:German statesmen . The bishopric of Olmutz was founded in 1073, and raised to the See also:rank of an archbishopric in 1777 . The bishops were created princes of the See also:empire in 1588 . The See also:archbishop is the only one in the Austrian empire who is elected by the cathedral See also:chapter .
