OTTAKAR I (d. 1230)  , See also:

king of Bohemia, was a younger son of King Vladislav II . (d . 1174) and a member of the Premyslide See also:family, hence he is often referred to as Premysl Ottakar I . His See also:early years were passed amid the anarchy which prevailed everywhere in his native See also:land; after several struggles, in which he took See also:part, he was recognized as ruler of Bohemia by the See also:emperor See also:Henry VI. in 1192 . He was, however, soon overthrown, but renewing the fight in 1196 he forced his See also:brother, King Vladislav III., to abandon Bohemia to him and to content himself with See also:Moravia . Although confirmed in the posses"See also:sion of his See also:kingdom by the See also:German king, See also:Philip, See also:duke of See also:Swabia, Ottakar soon deserted Philip, who thereupon declared him deposed . He then joined the See also:rival German king, See also:Otto of See also:Brunswick, afterwards the emperor Otto IV., being recognized as king of Bohemia both by Otto and by his ally, See also:Pope See also:Innocent III . Philip's consequent invasion of Bohemia was a See also:great success . Ottakar, having been compelled to pay a See also:fine, again ranged himself among Philip's partisans and still later was among the supporters of the See also:young king, See also:Frederick II . He See also:united Moravia with Bohemia in 1222, and when he died in See also:December 1230 he See also:left to his son, See also:Wenceslaus I., a kingdom united and comparatively peaceable .
