In 1553 he received the lands of the See also:abbey of See also:Paisley, and in 1568 he aided See also:Mary See also:Queen of Scots to See also:escape from Lochleven See also:castle, afterwards fighting for her at the See also:battle of Langside . His estates having been forfeited on See also:account of these proceedings, See also:Hamilton was concerned in the See also:murder of the See also:regent See also:Murray in 1570, and also in that of the regent See also:Lennox in the following See also:year; but in 1573 he recovered his estates . Then in 1579 the See also:council decided to See also:arrest Claud and his See also:brother See also:John (afterwards 1st See also:marquess of Hamilton) and to punish them for their past misdeeds; but the See also:brothers escaped to See also:England, where See also:Elizabeth used them as pawns in the See also:diplomatic See also:game, and later Claud lived for a See also:short See also:time in See also:France . Returning to See also:Scotland in 1586 and mixing again in politics, Hamilton sought to reconcile See also:James VI. with his See also:mother; he was in communication with See also:Philip II. of See also:Spain in the interests of Mary and the See also:Roman See also:Catholic See also:religion, and neither the failure of See also:Anthony See also:Babington's See also:plot nor even the defeat of the See also:Spanish See also:Armada put an end to these intrigues . In 1589 some of his letters were seized and he suffered a short imprisonment, after which he practically disappeared from public See also:life . Hamilton, who was created a Scottish See also:baron as See also:Lord Paisley in 1587, was insane during his concluding years . His eldest son James was created earl of See also:Abercorn (q.v.) in 16o6 .
