He studied See also:theology at the episcopal seminaries of Treviso and See also:Padua, and was ordained See also:priest in 1858 . For seventeen years he acted as See also:parish priest at various small places in See also:Venetia, until in 1875 he was appointed See also:canon of the See also:cathedral and See also:superior of the See also:seminary at Treviso . In 188o he refused the bishopric of Treviso, but in 1884, on the See also:express command of See also:Leo XIII., he accepted that of See also:Mantua . On the 12th of June 1893 he was created a See also:cardinal, and three days later was nominated See also:patriarch of See also:Venice . In Venice he made himself very popular owing to his piety, his simplicity and geniality, and by his readiness to See also:act in See also:harmony with the See also:Italian See also:government . He succeeded Leo XIII. in his See also:election to the papal See also:chair on the 4th of See also:August 1903 . |
