QUINSY, a common term for acute suppurative tonsilitis (q.v.). The English word (formerly " squinzey ") is a corruption of Fr. esquinancie, from Gr. KuvayXrl WOW, dog, and ayxew, to choke), and is derived from the suffocating tendency of the ailment.
