He built one See also:section of the Canadian Pacific railway, and was responsible for the erection of the See also:international See also:bridge over the See also:Niagara See also:river, the international railway bridge over the Rio Grande river and the See also:Lachine bridge over the St See also:Lawrence . In 1893 See also:Reid signed a See also:contract with the See also:government of See also:Newfoundland by which he under-took to construct a railway from St See also:John's to See also:Port-aux-See also:Basques and to See also:work the See also:line for ten years in return for a large See also:grant of See also:land . In 1888 he further contracted to work all the See also:railways in Newfoundland for fifty years on See also:condition that at the end of this See also:time they should become his See also:property . This bargain, which included other matters such as steamers, docks and telegraphs, was extraordinarily favourable to Reid; who, by further enormous grants of land, became one of the largest landed proprietors in the See also:world; public See also:opinion was aroused against it, and at first the See also:governor, See also:Sir See also:Herbert See also:Murray, refused to ratify it . After the premier, Sir See also:James See also:Winter, had been replaced by Mr (afterwards Sir) See also:Robert See also:Bond, the terms of the contract were revised, being made more favourable to Newfoundland, and Reid's interests were transferred to a See also:company, the Reid Newfoundland Company, of which he was the first See also:president (see NEWFOUNDLAND, Roads and Railways) . Reid was knighted in 1907, and he died on the 3rd of See also:June 1908 .
