RESPITE (O. In See also:law the See also:term is used of the postponement of the immediate See also:execution of the law in criminal cases, e.g. by binding a convicted prisoner over to come up for See also:judgment when called upon, or when a See also:case is " respited" from one See also:quarter sessions to another . The word is loosely used in the sense of a " See also:reprieve " (q.v.) .
