He studied at See also:Bonn University, where he received his See also:doctor's degree in 1843 . He entered the See also:British Museum in 1847, and after twenty years of service, a new See also:post, that of keeper of See also:Oriental See also:manuscripts, was created for him . He completed in 1871 the second See also:part, dealing with Arabian See also:MSS., of the Catalogus codicum manu scriptorum orientalium, which had been begun by See also:William See also:Cureton, and he issued a supplementary See also:volume in 1894 . He also See also:drew up a See also:Catalogue of the See also:Turkish Manuscripts (1888) and a Catalogue of the See also:Persian Manuscripts (4 vols., 1879-95), the latter being a storehouse of See also:information on the books and their authors . In 1895 he was made See also:professor of Arabic in the university of See also:Cambridge in See also:succession to See also:Robertson See also:Smith . He died in See also:London on the 19th of See also:March 1902 .
