In May of 1692 he served under See also:Russell at the battle of See also:Barfleur, and he greatly distinguished himself in a See also:night attack on the French See also:fleet at La Hogue, when he succeeded in burning six of their See also:ships . Shortly afterwards he received the See also:honour of See also:knighthood and a See also:reward of £r000 . In 1693 he commanded the See also:Smyrna See also:convoy, which was scattered and partly taken by the French admiral See also:Tourville near See also:Lagos See also:Bay . Till the See also:peace of Nymwegen(1697), he continued to serve in the Channel and Mediterranean .

In 1702 he commanded the expedition against See also:

Cadiz, and on the passage See also:home destroyed the See also:Plate fleet in See also:Vigo . With See also:Sir Cloudesley See also:Shovel he took part in the See also:capture of See also:Gibraltar on the 21st of See also:July 1704 . On the 13th of See also:August of the same See also:year he attacked the French fleet off See also:Malaga, the battle being See also:drawn . On See also:account of the dissatisfaction expressed indirectly at the result of the contest, he retired from the service in See also:February 1705 . He died on the 24th of See also:January 1709 .
