He was educated at the See also:universities of See also:Bonn, See also:Heidelberg and See also:Giessen, at the last of which he graduated Ph.D. in 1846 . He then studied at the university of See also:Marburg, where he wrote his first See also:essay, Ubersicht der geologischen Verhaltnisse See also:des Herzogtums Nassau (1847) . In 1849 he became See also:curator of the Natural See also:History Museum at See also:Wiesbaden, and began to study the See also:Tertiary strata of the Mayence See also:Basin, and also the Devonian fossils of the Rhenish provinces, on which he published elaborate See also:memoirs . In 1855 he was appointed See also:professor of See also:mineralogy and See also:geology at the Poly-technic See also:Institute at See also:Karlsruhe, and he took See also:part in the See also:geological survey of See also:Baden . From 1863 to 1896 he was professor of mineralogy and geology at the university of See also:Wurzburg . His See also:great See also:work See also:Die See also:Land- and Siisswasser-Conchylien der Vorwelt was published in 1870-1875 . Later he issued an authoritative work on See also:mineral See also:veins, Untersuchungen caber Erzgange (1882-1885) . He died at Wurzburg on the 11th of See also:April 1898 . His See also:brother GUIDO See also:SANDBERGER (1821-1869) was an authority on fossil See also:cephalopoda, and together they published Die Versteinerungen des rheinischen Schichtensystems in Nassau (1850-1856) . |
