JONATHAN See also:SHIPLEY (1714-1788)  , See also:bishop of St See also:Asaph, was educated at See also:Reading and See also:Oxford . He was ordained about 1738, and acted as See also:tutor in the See also:household of the 3rd See also:earl of See also:Peter-See also:borough . In 1743 he became See also:rector of See also:Silchester and See also:Sherborne St See also:John, See also:Hampshire, and See also:prebendary of See also:Winchester . He was appointed to a canonry of See also:Christ See also:Church, Oxford, in 1748, and in 176o to the deanery of Winchester and the living of Chilbolton, Hampshire, which he held in addition to his earlier preferments . In 1769 he was consecrated successively bishop of See also:Llandaff and of St Asaph . He was much concerned with politics, and joined the Whig party in strong opposition to the policy of See also:George III. towards the See also:American colonies . In 1779 he was the only bishop to See also:advocate the abolition of all See also:laws against See also:Protestant dissenters . He died on the 6th of See also:December 1788 . His See also:brother, See also:William See also:Shipley (1714-1803), originated the Society of Arts; and his son, William See also:Davies Shipley (1745-1826), became See also:dean of St Asaph .
