SIROCCO , a name applied to two quite distinct types of See also:local See also:wind . The first type is the characteristic wind of the See also:winter See also:rainy See also:season in the Mediterranean region, and is associated with the eastern See also:side of local depression or cyclones, in which the See also:weather is moist, cloudy and rainy, the prevailing directions being See also:south and south-See also:east . The second type is the intensely dry dust-laden wind of the See also:desert which receives this name in See also:Sicily and See also:southern See also:Italy especially, where the See also:general direction is south-east or south-See also:west . Local winds of this latter type receive a See also:great variety of names in different parts of the Mediterranean and surrounding regions (see See also:LEVECHE, See also:LESTE, See also:KHAMSIN, See also:SIMOOM) . |
