Two of See also:Edward IV's daughters were entrusted to his keeping; he was a member of the royal See also:council and he obtained the livings of See also:Combe See also:Martin, See also:Devon, of See also:Great See also:Grimsby and of See also:Cheshunt, See also:Hertfordshire . In 1491 he was made See also:dean of St See also:Stephen's, See also:Westminster, and two years later bishop of See also:Coventry and See also:Lichfield . The bishop was a member of See also:Prince See also:Arthur's council in the See also:marches of See also:Wales, and in 1501, five years after he had been translated to the bishopric of Lincoln, he became See also:lord See also:president of Wales . About 1507 he and See also:Sir See also:Richard See also:Sutton (d . 1524) set to See also:work to found a new college in Oxford . They rebuilt Brasenose See also:Hall, added other existing halls to it, and having obtained a See also:charter in 1512, called it The See also:King's haule and college of Brasennose . See also:Smyth, who was one of the executors of Henry VII.'s will, retired from public See also:life just after this King's See also:death, owing probably to some See also:differences between Bishop Richard See also:Fox and himself; be was, however, president of Wales until his death at Buckden in See also:Huntingdonshire on the 2nd of See also:January 1514 . Although an able and scholarly man, Smyth had little sympathy with the new learning . He bestowed See also:rich livings upon his relatives, one of whom, See also:Matthew Smyth, was the first See also:principal of Brasenose College . In addition to his liberal gifts to Brasenose College he gave See also:money or See also:land to Lincoln and to See also:Oriel Colleges; he founded a school at See also:Farnworth, Lancashire, and he refounded the See also:hospital of St See also:John at Lichfield .

From 1500 to 1503 he was See also:

chancellor of Oxford University .
