STENOGRAPHY (from Gr. arev6c, close, narrow, and ypageuv, to write), the system or art of writing by signs re-presenting single sounds or groups of sounds, single words or groups of words, sometimes also styled " brachygraphy " (Gr. Opox , short); it is a general term including all the various systems of shorthand writing (see SHORTHAND).
