He studied at the See also:Vienna Conservatorium from 1843 to 1848, as a See also:pupil of Bohm; made his first See also:appearance in 1850, and five years afterwards made a tour in See also:Italy; in 1857 he became acquainted with his lifelong friend, the 'cellist See also:Piatti, and toured with him in See also:Germany and See also:Sweden . From 186o to 1864 he was See also:concert-meister at See also:Frankfort, and during these years he visited See also:England frequently, in the See also:year 1864 taking up his See also:residence there . He was for many years See also:leader of See also:Halle's See also:orchestra in See also:Manchester, and a See also:familiar figure at the Popular Concerts in See also:London . He was first See also:violin in the See also:Queen's See also:Band . He retired, owing to See also:ill See also:health, in 1893, and from that See also:time till his See also:death, on the 23rd of See also:October 1899, lived at See also:Cambridge . His playing, whether of violin or See also:viola, had very See also:great qualities; he was perfect in ensemble, and his See also:power of self-effacement was of a piece with his See also:gentle disposition and with the pure love of See also:art which distinguished him through See also:life . A more lovable nature never existed, and his quiet See also:influence on the art of his time was very great .
