SYRINGE (Gr. ovpryE, See also:reed, See also:pipe)  , a See also:hydraulic See also:instrument, based on the principle of the See also:pump, for the See also:drawing up and ejecting of liquids . The See also:ordinary See also:form is that of a See also:glass or See also:metal See also:tube ending in a pointed nozzle and fitted with an See also:air-tight See also:piston-See also:rod and handle . The nozzle is inserted in the liquid, which enters the See also:cylinder by atmospheric pressure when the piston-rod is See also:drawn up . On pushing back the piston the fluid is ejected in a See also:jet through the nozzle . In sizes varying from the See also:needle-pointed hypodermic See also:syringe to the abdominal syringe, it is a See also:common surgical See also:implement used for the injection of fluids into the See also:body or for the washing of wounds and cavities . The smaller syringes are made of glass, the larger of metal; the most common medical syringes consist of a length of indiarubber tubing, one end terminating in a nozzle of See also:ivory or other easily cleaned material, in the centre is a bulb or See also:ball which under pressure draws up the liquid through the See also:free end of the tube which is placed in the See also:vessel containing it . There are a very large number of different types of syringe used in surgical practice . A larger syringe of metal, with a See also:flat perforated nozzle is used as a See also:garden implement for watering See also:plants .
