Among his numerous public appointments were those of See also:dean of the See also:chapel royal and member of the See also:council of the See also:north . In 1540 he was made See also:bishop of See also:Westminster, being the first and only occupant of that see; in 1550, three years after Henry VIII.'s See also:death, he resigned the bishopric, which was dissolved, and became bishop of See also:Norwich . As a diplomatist See also:Thirlby had a See also:long and varied experience; on several occasions he was sent on embassies to the See also:emperor See also:Charles V., and he helped to arrange the See also:peace between See also:England and See also:France in 1559 . He appears to have served See also:Edward VI. loyally through-out his See also:short reign, both at See also:home and abroad, although it is certain that he disliked the religious changes and he voted against the See also:act of uniformity in 1549 . He was thus more at ease when See also:Mary ascended the See also:throne . Translated in 1554 to the bishopric of See also:Ely, he took See also:part in the trial of Cranmer at See also:Oxford and in the See also:consecration of Reginald See also:Pole as See also:archbishop of See also:Canterbury, but he himself did not take severe See also:measures against heretics . When See also:Elizabeth became See also:queen the bishop refused to take the See also:oath of supremacy; in other ways he showed himself hostile to the proposed religious changes, and in 1559 he was deprived of his bishopric . For See also:preaching against the innovations he was arrested in 1560, and he was in See also:honourable confinement at See also:Lambeth See also:Palace when he died on the 26th of See also:August 1570 .
