In 1678 he became See also:captain in the See also:Guards, with which he served in See also:Tangier, and in 1685 he was madelieutenant-See also:colonel of a See also:regiment of fusiliers, but almost at once he gave up his See also:commission because he disliked the proceedings of See also:James II., and became colonel of an Anglo-Dutch regiment, usually stationed in See also:Holland . At the See also:head of his men he landed in See also:England with See also:William of See also:Orange in 1688 and was made See also:governor of See also:Portsmouth and colonel of the See also:Coldstream Guards, while in 1689 he was chosen an See also:English member of See also:parliament . With the Coldstreams he served William III. at the See also:battle of Walcourt, and then as a See also:major-See also:general in See also:Ireland, where in 1691 he gained fame at the battle of See also:Aughrim and at the sieges of See also:Athlone, See also:Galway and See also:Limerick . He then went to the Nether-lands and added to his high reputation by his conduct at the battles of See also:Steenkirk and See also:Neerwinden . In 1694 Talmash, as he was generally called, proposed an expedition against See also:Brest, the leadership of which was given to him . The fortifications, however, were too strong, and although he led on the English troops with See also:great gallantry they were beaten off with heavy loss . Talmash himself was wounded, and returning to See also:Plymouth he died there on the See also:lath of See also:June 1694 . He was buried in Helmingham See also:church, where a See also:long inscription summarizes his See also:life .
