In 1808 he went to See also:Scotland, and after working there as a journeyman for five years, obtained employment, in See also:London with an architect . He began to practice as a See also:civil engineer on his own See also:account in 1823, but much of his See also:time was devoted to the preparation of his See also:engineering See also:text-books, which gained a wide reputation . They included Elementary Principles of See also:Carpentry (182o), almost the first See also:book of its See also:kind in English; See also:Practical See also:Treatise on the Strength of See also:Cast See also:Iron and other Metals (1824); Principles of Warming and Ventilating Public Buildings (1824); Practical Treatise on Railroads and Carriages (1825); and The See also:Steam See also:Engine (1827) . He died in London on the 28th of See also:January 1829 .
