The word tribute was also applied in the See also:Roman See also:republic to (1) certain extraordinary taxes, as opposed to the See also:ordinary vectigalia . Such, in particular, were certain See also:property taxes, raised to meet the expenses of See also:war . They were levied on all citizens alike, in proportion to the extent of a See also:man's See also:fortune, and varied according to the See also:total amount of revenue to be raised . (2) To the ordinary stipendium or tax of fixed amount paid either in money or in See also:kind, on property, trades, or as a See also:poll-tax, raised in the Roman provinces (see See also:PROVINCE) .
