In the See also:king's trial, he was chosen by See also:Louis as counsel for the See also:defence, and per-formed this difficult and dangerous task with high ability and courage . During the See also:Directory he was deputy at the See also:Council that See also:judges be nominated by the executive directory . Under the Consulate he was See also:president of the tribunal of cassation, and collaborated in preparing the final See also:scheme for the civil See also:code . He had a marked See also:influence on the code, and succeeded in introducing See also:common See also:law principles in spite of the opposition of his colleagues, who were deeply imbued with See also:Roman law . He died on the loth of March 18o6, being the first senator of the See also:empire to be buried in the See also:Pantheon .
