He first studied See also:painting at the See also:Berlin See also:Academy, pursued his studies at Carlsruhe, and, having won a travelling scholarship upon the See also:exhibition of his See also:early See also:works, he visited See also:Paris in 1867, and afterwards See also:Italy, where he remained for some See also:- TIME (0. In 1873 he was appointed See also:professor at the Berlin Academy, of which he afterwards became director
