He first studied See also: painting at the Berlin See also: Academy, pursued his studies at Carlsruhe, and, having won a travelling scholarship upon the See also: exhibition of his early See also: works, he visited See also: Paris in 1867, and afterwards See also: Italy, where he remained for some See also: time

On his return he received several See also: state commissions, and on the out-break of the Franco-Prussian War in 1870 he was sent with the staff of the third corps d'armee, and stayed in See also: France. till the close of the See also: campaign

In 1873 he was appointed professor at the Berlin Academy, of which he afterwards became director

Among his more important works must be named " The Capitulation of See also: Sedan," " Proclamation of the German See also: Empire at See also: Versailles," " See also: Moltke before Paris," " Moltke at Versailles," " The Meeting of Bismarck and See also: Napoleon III.," " Christ and the Tribute See also: Money," " See also: William I. visiting the Tombs," " The Congress of Berlin," and some decorations executed in mosaic for the Triumphal
