WHITING, a city of Lake county, Indiana, U.S.A., on the S.W. shore of Lake Michigan, about Io m. S.E. of Chicago. Pop. (1890) 1408; (1900) 3983 (1597 foreign-born); (1910) 6587. It is served by the Baltimore & Ohio, the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern, the Pennsylvania, the Chicago, Indiana & Southern and (for freight only) the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern, the Chicago Terminal Transfer, and the Indiana Harbour Belt rail-ways; and is connected with Chicago and with the surrounding
