After marrying See also:Isabella (d . 1393), daughter of See also:Peter the Cruel, king of See also:Castile, he was appointed one of the See also:English lieutenants in See also:Brittany, whither he led an See also:army in 1375 . A second campaign in Brittany was followed in 1381 by an expedition under the earl's leadership to aid See also:Ferdinand, king of See also:Portugal, in his struggle with See also:John I., king of Castile; but after a See also:period of inaction See also:Edmund was compelled to return to See also:England as Ferdinand had concluded an See also:independent See also:peace with Castile . Accompanying See also:Richard II. on his See also:march into See also:Scotland, he was created See also:duke of See also:York in See also:August 1385, and subsequently on three occasions he acted as See also:regent of England . In this capacity he held a See also:parliament in 1395, and he was again serving as regent when See also:Henry of See also:Lancaster, after-wards Henry IV., landed in England in See also:July 1399 . After a feeble See also:attempt to defend the interests of the absent king, York joined the victorious invader; but soon retired from public See also:life, and, in the words of See also:Froissart as translated by See also:Lord See also:Berners, laye styll in his See also:castell, and medled with nothynge of the busynesse of Englande." He died at King's Langley on the 1st of August 1402 . York was a See also:man who preferred See also:pleasure to business, and during the See also:critical events of his See also:nephew's reign he was content to be guided by his more ambitious See also:brothers, the See also:dukes of Lancaster and See also:Gloucester . His second wife was See also:Joan, or Johanna (d.2434), daughter of See also:Thomas See also:Holland, earl of See also:Kent, but his only See also:children were two sons and a daughter, See also:Constance (d . 1416), by his first wife .
