The Ohio State Buckeyes football team plays at the Ohio Stadium. The Ohio Stadium is also known by the name “the Horseshoe.” The Ohio State Buckeyes won the college football national championship at the 2003 Fiesta Bowl. This victory was Ohio State’s seventh national championship. It also won in 1942, 1954, 1957, 1967, 1968, and 1970. Ohio State also holds a total of 14 national titles.

Football Coaching

Several coaches from Ohio State Buckeyes have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. They include: Howard Jones, Earle Bruce, Francis Schmidt, John Wilce, and Woody Hayes. Woody Hayes was a passionate coach who has the closest ties with Ohio State. The newest coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes is Jim Tressel who helped the Buckeyes to a bowl game and two National Titles during his tenure.

Football Players

The Ohio State Buckeyes players have included: Archie Griffin, Les Horvath, Howard Cassady, Eddie George, and Troy Smith. Several Ohio State Buckeyes football players were drafted in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft, including: A.J. Hawk, Bobby Carpenter, Donte Whitner, Santonio Holmes, and Nick Mangold. Ashton Youboty was drafted in the third round. Nate Salley and Rob Sims were chosen in the fourth round. In 2007, Troy Smith went on to win the Heisman Trophy.

Men’s Basketball History

The men’s basketball team of the Ohio State Buckeyes has participated in ten NCAA Final Fours and won the championship in 1960. The 1960 team was led by Bob Knight, Jerry Lucas, and John Havlicek. The Ohio State Buckeyes men’s basketball players have been named a first team All American twenty-three times. From 1960 to 1964, the Ohio State Buckeyes won five Big Ten Championships, a record that has yet to be broken.

Men’s Basketball Coaching

Ohio State University fired its men’s basketball coach Jim O’Brien in 2004. O’Brien was fired for recruiting violations. Ohio State University imposed a one year penalty as well as issuing other punishments. Because the university self-imposed these penalties, the NCAA Division I Committee went easy on Ohio State University by placing it on only three years of probation. The Committee was harsher with O’Brien and his former assistant coach. O’Brien successfully sued Ohio State University for wrongful termination. Thad Matta is the current coach for the Ohio State Buckeyes men’s basketball team.

Men’s Basketball Players

The Ohio State Buckeyes men’s basketball players have included Greg Oden and Mike Conley, Jr. The Ohio State Buckeyes finished the season by winning the Big Ten tournament. The Ohio State Buckeyes reached the Championship Game for the first time in 45 years in 2006, but ultimately lost to the Florida Gators.
