The first home of the site was www.bbcnc.org.uk. The “nc” stood for “networking club.” It was launched in April of 1994. One year later, the BBC offered online discussion groups, pages for a number of programs related to the web, and infotmation from departments of the BBC. It also offered pages for associates and an internet service. A new site, www.bbc.co.uk, was started in 1996, although the older address remained active for a short time afterwards. For some time, www.bbc.co.uk was used for educational and corporate purposes. Entertainment content was posted on www.beeb.com. Both sites merged in 1998 and became BBC Online. The site www.bbcnc.org.uk is no longer in service. The www.beeb.com address redirects visitors to the BBC Shop site at www.bbcshop.com.

The website provides news that it receives from the BBC News website. It also features thorough sports coverage, music information, science pages, technology pages, entertainment pages, and other media. Though the website has a very British slant, the home page, news and sports sections allow the readers to choose between UK and international variants. BBC Online incorporated the h2g2 project, previously independent of Douglas Adams, into a number of websites. It is now changing all of the existing message boards. DNA software was taken from this project. The Collective magazine of the site utilizes the DNA software as well. Although it is very unusual for such a high-traffic website, www.bbc.c.uk, has extended technical information about its operations readily available. The BBC allows a certain amount of its content from www.bbc.co.uk and the BBC News site to be read in XML format. This is available on its developer network. Because of its participation in the Creative Archive License group, www.bbc.co.uk permits the legal downloading of various materials through the internet.
Streaming MediaThe BBC Raido Player lets users listen to many of the broadcasts from the BBC’s several radio stations. News and sports events were streamed with various media for up to seven days following the initial broadcast. The media was broadcast using the RealAudio and RealVideo formats which drew criticism from visitors. This is because these formats could only be played with RealPlayer. Many people were not happy about the closed formats because it limited the amount of media available for download. With the request for more media ringing, the BBC decided to act. The BBC negotiated a deal with RealNetworks to provide an alternate version of the RealPlayer. When the Helix Project was introduced, the Real format became playable on a larger range of devices and platforms. These included: Windows, Mac OS X, Unix, Linux, Symbian, and Windows Mobile. Windows Media has also been used and is now available for listeners in the UK.
