Charteris, Richard, Australian musicologist; b. Chatham Islands, New Zealand, June 24, 1948. He was educated at Victoria Univ. in Wellington (B.A., 1970), the Univ. of Canterbury (M.A., Honors, 1972, and the Univ. of Canterbury in London (Ph.D., 1976, with the diss. John Coprano (Cooper) c. 1575-1626: A Study and Complete Critical Edition of His Instrumental Music) . After serving as Rothmans Research Fellow in the music dept. at the Univ. of Sydney (1976–78) and Research Fellow in the music dept. at the Univ. of Queensland (1979–80), he joined the music dept. at the Univ. of Sydney, successively as Australian Research Grants Scheme Chief Investigator (1981–90), Australian Research Council Senior Research Fellow (Reader, 1991-94), and Prof, in Historical Musicology and ARC Senior Research Fellow (from 1995). In 1990 he was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities. His scholarly interests include European music of the 16 th , 17 th , and 18 th centuries. He has publ., over 100 books and editions, in addition to many articles in professional journals.
