Small Food Processors - Buying Small Food Processors

If you love to cook or are new to cooking, just trying to eat at home and save money, a food processor is a wonderful tool. Many people are turned off by food processors because of their price and size. If you are typically serving one to four people, small food processors, often called mini food processors, are the way to go. Small food processors can typically be found for $50 or less.

Food processors are great for handling all chopping, mincing, slicing, and shredding needs. Many people confuse food processors and blenders. The difference is that blenders are made more for liquids. Food processors are primarily for solid foods. A small food processor holds from 1 to 4 cups. Typically, one-cup of each food item is needed for each person.

Some small processors are impractical because of their feeding tube, where the food is pushed into the processor, is extremely small. If the feeding tube is too small it will require you to chop the vegetables with a knife. If you have to manually chop or slice the vegetables, it defeats the whole purpose of the machine. Sometimes, liquids have to be poured into the food processor. A small feeding tube will also make this difficult.

Even though a small food processor doesn’t have the bowl-size of larger models, it should not skimp on power. Any good food processor should have a minimum of 200 watts of power. Just because it’s small, doesn’t make the vegetables softer or easier to chop.

Small food processors get a lot of use. Some people use theirs on a daily basis, or even more than once per day. Because of this, it will need to be cleaned often. Cleaning can mar the finish of the unit, so you want to make sure you get a food processor with a durable finish. Stainless steel is always a good choice.

Even small food processors should come with an assortment of attachments. Different blades are needed for different sorts of chopping or slicing. Also, different foods require different attachments. Some people like their food processor to have a dough hook to help in making bread.

Some other functions to look for in a food processor are a reverse function. This can be helpful when using it for difficult grinding. If you typically wash your dishes in a dishwasher, make sure the mini food processor is dishwasher safe. Not all of them are. Another useful feature is one-touch control. This means less buttons that need to be cleaned.

Here are three good choices for small processors:

• Black & Decker MiniPro Plus – The MiniPro Plus is small, yet powerful. It measures 9 inches wide x 5.5 inches deep x 6 inches tall. It features a 2-cup capacity and can handle all slicing, shredding, and chopping needs. The disc-blades are stainless steel and reversible. It can be run on high, low, or on short pulses. It also features a safety device to make sure all the parts are locked in before it will operate. This small food processor also has an output chute that can be used with any size external bowl. The feeding tube can be run on continuous feed for fast processing.

• Sunbeam Heritage Series Kitchen Assistant – This small food processor comes with 18 pieces for all types of needs. The attachments include two large containers (10 oz), six small containers (6 oz) for chopping, lids for the small containers, and a twist-on stainless steel blade. The unit is activated by pressing down on the container after the food has been added. This processor can be used for delicate jobs like graham crackers, or tough jobs like coffee beans. For most jobs only a few seconds are required.

• Cuisinart PrepExpress Handheld Food Processor – The PrepExpress is unconventional in that it doesn’t have its own bowl. It can either sit on the counter or be held by the handle. Food is fed in through the top to be chopped, sliced, or grated, and then is shot out into a waiting container. Since there is no bowl or chamber, capacity is determined only by the size of the bowl. The unit is easily operated using only a thumb-switch.
